Don’t let them box you in.

There are a lot of articles being written and shared on social media regarding thoughts on the recent violence provoked by armed racist demonstrators at Charlottesville this past weekend.

There is a lot to say about responsibility and blame and whataboutism and motivation and history and hindsight, but I’m not interested in that right now because I’m seeing what I believe is a bigger problem.

If you have spent any time on social media since Saturday, then you have undoubtedly videos or articles or graphics shared by your friends and family that will in some way lay the responsibility for the violence in the hands of one major political party or the other.

Do. Not. Fall. For. This.

If you see an article blaming “conservatives” or “the right” for fostering racism, reject it. If you aren’t a racist, if you don’t condone torch marches, if you don’t condone skin heads, if you don’t condone the use of racial slurs, if you don’t condone violence provocation, if you don’t condone terrorizing a community with hate-symbols and firearms brandishing – don’t accept the language that loops you in with it.

If you see an article blaming “the left” or “progressives” or “liberals” for what happened in Charlottesville, reject it. If you aren’t flipping cars, if you aren’t looting stores, if you aren’t calling for the murder of bankers, – don’t accept the language that loops you in with it.

***And more important: Don’t frame your resentment of being pigeon-holed by pigeon holing the other side.***

Don’t let them box you in. Don’t box other people in.

Be good to each other.
